INSTRUCTOR

The course is taught by Rachel Canar who formerly created and taught the Minuf Professional Fundraising Course. Rachel has more than twenty years of nonprofit management experience in Israel and the U.S in programming, communications, PR, and resource development. Rachel’s expertise includes: private and foundation major gifts, online and direct mail fundraising, as well as training and mentoring people new to the field.

Rachel founded NGO catalyst to elevate and grow the field of professional fundraising in Israel. Rachel also works in partnership with Shlomit Yarkoni with whom she provides nonprofit organizations in Israel with strategic fundraising consulting.

At the end of the course participants will be able to

  1. Clearly organize digital and print data on all of their donors and donor histories and understand most database systems.
  2. Use spreadsheets to track their annual income, renewals, and prospective donations, and assess a fundraising program’s success.
  3. Write professional grants, solicitations, thank you letters, and reports.
  4. Find new major donor prospects using internet research including how to read U.S. tax documents to assess giving potential and interest.
  5. Write an organizational and project income and expense budget.
  6. Create an integrated communications program using direct mail, e-newsletter, and social media where relevant.
  7. Write a vision, goals, strategies, and measurable objectives for an organization and ultimately help evaluate the success of programs and help the organization plan strategically.

Why is Rachel's Professional Fundraising Training Program needed?

Since 90% of all funds to Israeli nonprofits come from North America, most fundraising positions must be filled by English speakers. Fundraising professionals are in high demand as the need surpasses the number of experienced and/or trained English-speaking professionals in the field.

NGO Catalyst Fundraising Training Program provides practical job training for the nonprofit world and helps new candidates launch a professional career in Israel. The program is also excellent for those who are already working in the field but never had any formal training or guidance. This course helps nonprofits, job seekers, and new fundraisers all at once.

What makes this course different from any other fundraising course?

This course is completely practical, teaching you what you actually need to do and how to do it for your first day, first week, first month and all throughout the first year on the job. Participants benefit from Rachel's special tips learned from her 20 years of successes and failures in the field.

Who is a good candidate for this kind of work, do you need previous experience or specific skills?

Good candidates for professional fundraising are those who write excellently in English, are highly organized, enjoy communicating with people, have a flair for marketing and PR, and are passionate about their causes. Most fundraising work is very diverse and interesting, so it is good for people who like to be intellectually stimulated and are comfortable multi-tasking. In many cases, it also offers a flexible schedule with much of the work able to be performed at home. For this reason, fundraising is a great profession for parents with young children.

Do you help course participants find work? Is it hard to find a job? What kind of jobs are there?

Because 90% of all fundraising in Israel is from Diaspora English speaking communities, fundraisers must work in English. There are estimated to be 30,000 NGOs in Israel and most of them need a professional fundraiser. Today there are many more fundraising jobs than there are exprienced or trained professional fundraisers. NGO Catalyst is very well connected with the Israeli NGOs community, helps participants network, provides information on openings and directs them to the appropriate job opportunities. Where relevant, recommendations are provided.

Don't I need to speak, read and write Hebrew fluenty to work in an Israeli NGO?

It is true that most jobs advertise for their perfect candidate, someone with years of experience and native level Hebrew and English. However, the reality as mentioned above is that there are very few people in Israel who match these qualifications. Many NGO fundraising jobs go unfilled for many months until they realize this reality. In the end, most NGOs will and should compromise and hire someone who is is a native English speaker and writer, understands the Diaspora Jewish community and has professional fundraising training and/or experience even without Hebrew. Once you tell them all you have learned in the course, they will be impressed.

“A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE”

“Rachel Canar’s Introduction to Professional Fundraising Course gives those who are new to the world of fundraising, as well as those who are involved with non-profits but want to learn more, a wealth of knowledge that will enable current and prospective fundraisers to secure funds for their organization in a professional and effective manner.

Rachel is a gifted communicator, and shares her wisdom through cultivating a warm and supportive learning atmosphere. It was a privilege to attend Rachel’s course and I would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to learn more about fundraising.”

“ESSENTIAL INFORMATION”

“Rachel is extremely knowledgeable in her field and her course is packed with essential information on fundraising for nonprofit organizations as well as on organizational development and branding. The information delivered is both clear and comprehensive. The course is also especially useful, as it explains how the nonprofit sector works in Israel and how to fundraise for Israeli-based NGOs.

Having both studied nonprofit management as well as worked in the NGO sector in the past, I found the course to be well organized and useful and I would highly recommend it to people who are new to the field, as well as to those who have previous experience but have not yet worked in Israel.”

“HELPED ME GET MY FIRST POSITION”

To my surprise, before I even finished the course, Rachel had helped me get my first position in the field which I am really enjoying. Not only is she knowledgeable and well connected, she is also lovely as a person and offers support and tips way beyond the course.

“A SOLID FOUNDATION”

"Rachel provided me with a solid foundation in nonprofit management: she successfully taught me how to write grants, how to conduct fundraising campaigns, and how the calendar cycle and inner workings of a nonprofit organization operated. She is able to break a task or concept down into its smallest components, and she can also stand back and show you how the smallest piece of something fits into a larger whole. Rachel is competent and compelling, friendly and funny, and she is also a great teacher and friend."
